| Financial race tightens in Pct. 1
BRAD STUTZMAN Editor
As Williamson County grows, so too grows the cost of its political campaigns.
Gone are the days when a candidate's success was assured, if he or she just went to (as former Republican Party Chairman Randy Grimes once put it) "every goat ropin' and chili supper."
Candidates have filed their most recent campaign finance reports with the county's Elections Administration office.
Precinct 1 Commissioners Court Republican primary rivals Lisa Birkman and Steve Laukhuf are almost neck-and-neck, for money raised during the July through December filing period.
Meanwhile the independently-wealthy Robert Chody - Republican challenger in the Pct. 1 Constable's race - has spent the most money this period.
The most recent reports were due Jan. 15. The next ones are due 30 days before the March 4 primaries (Feb. 4). Another report is due eight days before the primary (Feb. 25).
In the Pct. 1 Commissioners Court race, for the most recent filing period incumbent Birkman reported receiving $22,403 in contributions. She also reported $29,862 in expenditures.
Laukhuf reported $21,832 in contributions and $13,670 in expenditures.
Birkman reports total contributions maintained (a political war chest) of $48,896, while Laukhuf's contributions maintained is reported at $17,187.
In the race for Pct. 1 Constable, Republican incumbent Gary Griffin reports $6,551 raised and $5,093 spent this filing period.
Chody reports $1,927 raised and $31,655 spent.
Griffin reported a war chest of $6,360, compared to $1,477 for Chody.
Candidates are required to itemize contributions of $50 or more.
