Cedar Valley Middle School will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Oct. 19 through Oct. 23. Jennifer Ziegler, author of the Lone Star award book "How Not To Be Popular," will conduct writer's workshops for students and be available after school for a book-signing session Oct. 22.
RRCA
Round Rock Christian Academy will have its seventh annual dinner auction, "Harvest Bles-sings" Friday, Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. on the RRCA campus.
Dozens of items will be included in the silent and live auctions, including sports memorabilia, artisan jewelry, vacation packages, children's items, spa and professional services, photography and much more. For tickets and more information, call 255-4491.
ACC
The Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation has awarded the Austin Community College District Police Department "Recognized Status" for best practices in law enforcement. ACC PD is the first community college in Texas to receive this recognition and the 19th recognized law enforcement agency statewide.
"Recognized Status" indicates the ACC Police Department meets or exceeds all of the identified best practices for Texas law enforcement, in areas such as patrol and investigative operations and protection of citizen rights.
Over the past year, ACC PD undertook an internal review of all its policies, procedures, and op-erations, and the college made any necessary modifications in record time, according to the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation.
The department will be recognized at the Texas Police Chiefs Association's annual conference next April.
UT-Dallas
Megan Bishop, a University of Texas at Dallas art and performance student from McNeil High School, was chosen as a recipient of the 2009-10 Bryce Jordan Scholarship Fund for the Arts' annual dis-bursement. Bishop was one of 12 UT Dallas students selected for the scholarship. Each student was given $1,000 to $2,000 per semester to further their academic careers at the University.
The Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 to support undergraduate music students at the UT Dallas. Bryce Jordan, flutist and musicologist, was the first president of the university.
Wash-St. Louis
Ryan Grandin of Round Rock was named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Grandin is a graduate of Stony Point High School and is enrolled in the university's Olin Business School.
To make the dean's list in the Olin Business School, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 hours of graded course work.
Barnes & Noble
A special educator reception will take place at the Barnes & Noble Round Rock on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. The store is located in the La Frontera Village at the intersection of Interstate 35 and State Highway 45.
The reception is for all educators in the Central Texas area, especially in the following school districts: Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Hutto, Taylor, Manor and Elgin. Educators from all public and private schools grades kindergarten through 12th grade and home schoolers are invited to attend.
The reception will feature information about Barnes & Noble programs for educators including the Educator Discount Card, the Instore Bookfair program, the instore section of books and materials for teachers and parents and the Institutional Account program. Educators can enter to win a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card.
McDonalds
Kristin Stanczak, an accounting major from McNeil High School, recived a $1,000 from the Austin Community College Foundation in partnership with the Central Texas McDonald's Owner/Operator As-sociation.
Ozone Action
Ozone Action Heroes recently announced a school contest en-couraging students, families and organizations to take the ozone heroes' pledge.
The contest takes place from Sept. 14 to Oct. 23 and is open to schools in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties.
The school with the most entries will be announced on Oct. 28 and will win an Amy's Ice Creams party. For more information about the contest, please visit ozoneheroes.com.
UnitedHealth
UnitedHealth Group is giving children in Texas the opportunity to become "Health Heroes" by learning about childhood obesity, designing programs to address it and implementing the programs in their communities.
UnitedHealth Heroes is a health literacy initiative designed to encourage young people, working through educators and youth leaders, to create and implement local hands-on programs to address the issue of childhood obesity. UnitedHealth Group is partnering with Youth Service America to launch the second year of the program in Texas as well as 33 other states and the District of Columbia.
Schools and youth-focused, community center-based programs are eligible for UnitedHealth Heroes grants of up to $1,000. Grants will be awarded to programs that demonstrate a clear understanding of the health risks associated with childhood obesity; propose creative solutions to combating obesity in their schools and communities; and can be easily implemented, scaled and measured.
To obtain an application, visit ysa.org and click on the "UnitedHealth Heroes" link under "Support - Get Funding" or the "UnitedHealth Heroes" link under "What's New." Applications must be submitted online before midnight, Thursday, Oct. 22. Grant recipients will be notified in December and January.
