Mavericks never get footing in 36-2 defeat
Belton keeps McNeil at bay at RRISD complex

By ROBERT ESCALANTE
Special to the Leader

The dirty laundry was all over the field at Round Rock ISD Athletic Complex on Friday night. From the very first snap to everywhere in between, penalties were committed almost every other play. Unfortunately for McNeil (0-2) this did not aid them in a win as Belton (2-0) won 36-2.

The only score for McNeil came on a mishandled punt from Belton that flew out of the endzone.

It wasn't until late in the second quarter when Belton scored the first touchdown of the game, in a drive that was aided by a pass interference call on McNeil.

The first half of the game ended with a baseball score: McNeil 2, Belton 8.

As some of the penalties subsided in the second half that is when the Belton Tigers opened up their offense and put up 28 points. The Mavericks couldn't put themselves into scoring position the rest of the night except in the waning seconds of the game when it was out of reach. McNeil was shut out in the second half.

Belton quarterback David Ash had two touchdown passes and ran for another in the Tiger win.

After an over 300-yard rushing game last week against A&M Consolidated McNeil running back Adrian Smith was only a few yards from hitting the century mark as he finished off with 98 yards.

The first drive for the Tigers started on their own 37. The second play resulted in a McNeil hold which allowed the Tigers to cut across midfield where a few plays later their drive stalled at the 26.

The Mavericks took over on downs and started with an 11-yard gain by Adrian Smith. The second play of the drive included a 35-yard pass from Cole Smith to Dominic Smith. On fourth down the Mavericks' field goal attempt failed as the ball hit the left upright on the goal post.

Belton took over and their offense produced nothing on, going three and out on downs. On fourth down the Belton punter missed the snap and the ball flew out of the endzone, which led McNeil's lone points.

The next two drives by either team produced no points.

Belton took over on their own 38. As this drive seem to stall, a fourth down McNeil pass interference call put the Tigers deep in Maverick territory. Belton pushed themselves back to the 17 yard line and on first and goal quarterback David Ash ran in for a touchdown. Running back Kenny Shuler caught the two point conversion.
