Mavs reach consolation quarterfinals, Stony Point falls short

COLLEGE STATION - Round Rock ISD's representatives at the weekend's State 7-on-7 Tournament went into the event with vastly different agendas.

Defending District 16-5A champ Stony Point was looking to become the first team to win two state titles in a row, while McNeil - competing for the first time in the event since 2007 and boasting a new quarterback - was just hoping to build positive momentum before the season.

While the Tigers' run ended well short of state after a three-way tiebreaker Friday sent them to the consolation bracket where they earned just one more win Sunday to finish a respectable 3-2, the Mavs overcame adversity, including a minor scuffle, to push its way into the consolation quarterfinals.

After losing its first two games of pool play Friday to Coppell (39-21) and Saginaw Boswell (34-22), the turning point for the team came in its third matchup of the day against Katy Cinco Ranch, against which the Mavs scored a touchdown and extra point in the final minute to take a 19-18 win.

The resurgence continued Saturday morning versus Cy Woods, another school making its first state appearance, with a 32-26 win.

Down 14-0 after a first half that ended with people from both sidelines rushing the field and a player being ejected, McNeil found its focus in the second half and with the clock winding down senior receiver Terrell Smith hauled in the winning pass from Williams.

"Well, we were all tired. That was just an emotion play. It wasn't skill, it wasn't talent, it was just emotion," Smith said of the play. "We were all on our last energy bar here and knew we needed to score."

McNeil picked up an upset win over juggernaut Southlake Carroll (21-20), before finally falling to Lufkin, 27-21.
